Ear Training
While not all people were born to be musicians, it is always useful to try and train one’s ear. Indeed, without a musical ear one cannot learn how to play an instrument, but having a musical ear by birth may not be enough. Ear training refers to the process by which music theory is connected to the sounds people hear. There are several interactive pieces of software on the market that will help anyone do just that. The important thing for ear training is getting feedback. One can get the needed feedback from a live person or from a program on the computer. Otherwise, there is the danger of remembering the wrong connections between sounds and their names.
In any case, the first thing one has to take into consideration is that practice makes perfect. Nobody ever gets anywhere without constant training. Then, it is essential to listen to tons of music, many times a day. It would be ideal to find some favorite pieces to listen to over and over again, so as to be able to study the touches that seem more interesting or moving.
Singing is also a very good idea, just like it is to try and play an instrument. Of course, not everyone who trains their musical ear must play an instrument, but the truth is it makes things a lot easier. Many people refuse to do it because they feel it is too time consuming. Nevertheless, one should consider the benefits as well: once you’ve tried your hand at the guitar or the piano, the musical ear training is likely to progress faster and smoothly. Vocal training is often underrated: not many people know that by actually singing the notes they help their musical memory too. This is a good way of practicing the connections between sounds and their names as well as the ability to reproduce correctly a certain sound that you hear.
Another tip, especially directed at parents is that the earlier a person starts training their ear, the easier it seems to be for them to make progress: so it would probably be a good idea to encourage children to give it a try and even to start learning how to play the piano or the guitar at an early age, as a favorite pass time, not necessarily as a task. If it feels like having fun, it is never too difficult.
